<p>Welcome to GDN. The first thing you need to learn is how to program. I recommend <a href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/freebasic">FreeBASIC</a>, at least starting out. FreeBASIC is free and a great beginning programming language. However, it's not so great for making games. I recommend it as an educational tool. Here's some links :</p> <ul> <li><a href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/freebasic:getting-started-with-freebasic">Getting Started with FreeBASIC</a> - start here</li> <li><a href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/freebasic:easy-freebasic">Easy FreeBASIC</a> - no frills tutorial series</li> <li><a class="newpage" href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/freebasic:fbhacker">FBHacker</a> - tutorials as challenges</li> </ul> <p>Once you have the basics down, you can move up to a <a href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/game-programming-language">game programming language</a> like <a class="newpage" href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/brutus2d">Brutus2D</a>. You could start with Brutus2D and people who do have been doing well. However, I'm not comfortable recommending it as a first programming language (yet). Brutus2D is also free. See <a href="https://gamedesign.wikidot.com/brutus2d:getting-started-with-brutus2d">Getting Started with Brutus2D</a>.</p> <p>-hartnell</p>
