The wikidot software that GDN and related sites uses is a bit… experimental. Here's the typical fix :

When you log in check Do not time out my session. uncheck bind this session to my ip. —hartnell

After being told that it was "exciting" not to know the "secret plan", which has screwed me royally, I have officially resigned from the admin site and the community site. If I could put a boot up Michal and Co's ass right now, I would. —hartnell

I technically still am, but due to Michal's mismanagement of the community, lack of the ability to delete spam sites (which is a mystery I won't go into here) and abusive sites, and lack of support for any of my initiatives, including a simple "no, that doesn't fit with our secret plan, comrade.", I'm now on the record as having broken ties with Michal.

One example was I was beginning to organize users who had skill and were interested in creating new themes. Two days later we find out he now has a themer. There's no point in trying to improve wikidot when we have no idea if our efforts will be overrun by the "secret plan" he refuses to share with anyone.

When the open source version comes out, we're moving. :)

— hartnell

Hartnell, aren't you some kind of admin here at wikidot now? There is something seriously wrong with the login procedure. Practically everyone has now had problems logging in. Try and kick that Michael-dude's ass into gear and fix it :)

Games with Ari Feldman's sprites are fine. He has some kind of open license (please read it, but I'm not going to bother to make sure you follow it.) Er, I'm not for sure how to deal with the link. If you post a link to your personal page, that's fine, as we are not responsible for what's on it. However, if you post a link to "MY GAME" rather than "GAME WITH HALO SPRITES" the rule of "ignorance is bliss" applies. :)

—hartnell

Alright i won't post anything that might lead to any legal backlash.I know that ari feldman has his free sprites and i will use them instead if thats alright? also would i be allowed to post a link to a personal page of my own containing the download? if not its no biggie. I actually used to run a ROM site for 2 years before i was shut down so i don't want to cause GDN any trouble.

-webfaction

sorry i am posting Anonymously but i am unable to log in.

Glad to hear it. However, I hate to say it, but please don't post your game here. We'd pee our pants to a new member using Blitz (u9 has proven good with it before), but we don't allow ripped sprites or sprites based on copyrighted properties here.

With the virtual consoles and major game companies getting involved in the game creation hobby, the backlash for using these kinds of sprites is coming — and it's going to be severe. I'm trying to make sure that when their lawyers burn through thousands of websites, GDN remains untouched.

I realize this policy leaves the average game programmer without sprites, but were working on creating our own sprites, which you can see in our Sprite Art section.

For a good starter project, how about trying pong? On that page you will find pseudo-code and I've just added the sprite sheet we used for our research.

—hartnell

Thanks alot hartnell. I am taking your advice about just getting started and i am going to stick with blitz. I am working on a small 2d game(project) using some halo made sprites i found on google. Thanks for the advice I hope soon to be able to pay it forward and contribute to others on the GDN.

-Webfaction

I'd say Blitz Basic is a fine place to start, I mean, I've never used but just about all languages are fine as long as they have the base functions that you need.

Sorry, my bad. Blitz is great. Unfortunately Blitz doesn't have a free version, so we don't use it much. Most of us use Basic4GL, Game Maker, or Brutus2D. Most of us can use anything after looking at the manual. :) —hartnell

Just about all concepts in game programming are the same. I can take the same concepts used to make pong in Basic4GL and apply it to programming pong in FreeBASIC. Also, all languages are based on the same concepts. Some programming languages are more advanced than others, but what you learn in one you will find useful when using another. So it doesn't matter what you choose to start with, just that you get started. :) —hartnell

Hello there to everyone at GDN. My name is webfaction and i am a senior in highschool who wishes to pursue a carrer in the game industry. I have some experience with Visual Basic, Blitz basic and a limited exposure to Visual c# (XNA THING). I was wondering what is the feeling on programming in Blitz basic?? I'm worried that i might be wasting time.

Thanks to everyone

-Webfaction
