u play as a character in a role playing game in zelda you play as link hence you play a role in a ROLE PLAYING GAME
so as such zelda is a role playing game
so when im playing mario im playing a character in a role, so its automatically an rpg? dont think so.
By that definition, basically every game in existence is an RPG.
Retard…
in a previous article u said that if u pretend u are a retarded monkey for thirty seconds then u have there for played the role of a retarded monkey and played an RPG in zelda u play the role of link and try to save princess zelda and the world from the evil Gannondorf therefor u are playing the role of a character in a game which means zelda is in fact a
ROLE PLAYING GAME. in the final fantasy series u play the role of a character on a journey just like the legend of zelda and since the final fantasy series classed as an RPG
then so is zelda.

I grew up way before Zelda even came out. Zelda is an RPG, because there is in fact a "Level up" system. Like most D&D games, which are purely hack & slash (IE characters play a character for a single game that only is about killing things, xp is nulled out); You take the role of link, you play the character, you are in a game. D&D does not need stats or xp, or any of that junk to be fun.
A Level 1 character in D&D can if done right, outright slaughter a level 10 or even 20 character.
Er… what part of "rpg mechanics" do you people not understand? Really this is getting very very old. It's all very simple, if you'd just read the article rather than skipping down to the comment section to put in your nonsense. Nonsense like :
A Level 1 character in D&D can if done right, outright slaughter a level 10 or even 20 character.
In a video game, never. Unless you cheated.
In an RPG, yes. You have never played an RPG. This is evident because you said this :
Like most D&D games, which are purely hack & slash …
D&D video games, right? :) Or does your DM just suck eggs?

OK, so there are people here argumenting that Zelda is an RPG because you get to play as Link and go all around as Link.
So, should I assume that Doom and Quake are also RPGs? After all, you play the role of a soldier who has to get rid of aliens / monsters /etc.
Didn't "u" read the notes? From the sound of it, you're one of the people who DO NOT remember the Gold Box series. From your argument, if I pretend to be a retarded monkey for two seconds, I've just played the "Retarded Monkey RPG", simply because I have played a role. That idea is frankly retarded.
Did you ever stop and think that Final Fantasy is based off of RPG stats? While Zelda is not. Also, you might want to see the list of annoying words and phrases. Otherwise, "U" are likely to be ignored.
I don't know how people can read your article and then still not understand, it made perfect sense to me.
Hi, after reading through your article, it looks like "Secret of Mana" (SNES 1993 or so) is an action RPG.
It features many things that can be compared to Zelda for it's gameplay as for new weapons and items which increase defense or attack, but it also features a leveling concept based on the experience of the character. There's also a bit of luck when you try to hit.
Then a question comes to me. If the term RPG is reserved for games where experience comes with time and luck is part of the process, would you consider an RPG only a matter of these being reduced to computations and pseudo-random issues ? Or maybe you would agree that the experience of the player improving in his gamepad control and his real life luck (real-random instead of pseudo-random) also leads to calling Zelda a RPG ? :D
PS: I still HAVE the gold cartridge ;)
I can't say I remember actually playing the Secret of Mana. I know of it, but that is as far as my knowledge goes. However, this is about Zelda, not Secret of Mana.
I think I was very clear in the article. Console RPGs games that are based on the combat system of traditional RPGs. Action adventure games are based on ability keys. Secondly, no role playing is possible in console game, therefore a console RPG is a pale imitation, and repeating my original point, only has the battle system of a traditional RPG. Lastly, I did not reference the gold cartridge alone, I referenced the gold box series :

PS. :) My gold cartridge hasn't aged well. How's yours?
If we go by the definition of the first jerks, then ANY game where you only play as one character would be an RPG. Hello, anonymous too-lazy-to-write-more-than-one-letter-in-"you", by your definition, HALO would be an RPG! To edit from your quote:
u play as a character in a role playing game in halo you play as master chief hence you play a role in a ROLE PLAYING GAME
so as such halo is a role playing game
In my opinion, every videogame that has a level-based system is a console RPG,
Zelda was really an adventure game, besides what was your point 88.112.59.84?
First off, kudos on the article, I've been saying this for YEARS since Zelda: A Link To The Past came out and people spouted off on how it was an RPG and got the same logic as some posters here. You play the role of LINK so it IS an RPG.. so what you're saying is…
Super Mario Bros (lets go back as far as NES, SMB 1) is an RPG? I after all I play the role of Mario or Luigi. Wow.. and me with all those years of thinking it was under the "side scroller" category..
Galaxian (yes, Atari) is an RPG? After all im playing the role of the little man in the ship. Damn, I really thought that was in the classic top view shooter category.
How about Duke Nukem (we'll goto Duke 3D in this case to avoid the sidescroller analogy), thats an RPG because I play the role of Duke Nukem? Darn it! I thought I had this one! I always thought that was a First Person Shooter!
Super Mario Cart is an RPG, cuz I play the role of one of the various racers in the game, I get it I get it.. its DEFINATLY not a racing game.. its an RPG cuz you play a ROLE…
I see… FINE.. your logic is UNDENIABLE.. ALL GAMES ARE RPG's! lol.. Please excuse my sarcasm, but this is why we have game categories, just about every game you play a "role" of sorts, however RPG has a dynamically structured system in order to actually BE the role and not follow the dotted line like in games such as Zelda.
Bottom line, Zelda is Action/Adventure… NOT and RPG, it denies all rules therein the RPG category of games, if you must know and play RPG games. The following list will suffice:
Final Fantasy
Phantasy Star
Dragon Warrior
Sailor Moon: Another Story (for the girls :p)
ect.. feel free to catch my logic before Zelda is braggingly enough your favorite RPG game. Read documents on how to make RPG games, you will find the rules Zelda upholds are not part of the system engines that RPGs are built on.

Dude!! Going by your (inane) logic, even Max Payne, a Third Person Action game, would also be an RPG cause you friggin play the game as Max Payne!! Then you'll go all out and say that even Prince of Persia and even Halo are RPG's as you goddam play the role of the protagonists!!
Needless to say your logic is utterly retarded.
