Hello everyone,
I'm extremely happy that I've stumbled upon this site. I am currently a college student working on a BFA concentrated in Digital Art. I started my collegiate career as a computer science major and plan on picking up a CS major. I'm still pretty new to the actual development of games (although I've planed on this career since the age of 2). I'm sure that I will have a ton of questions for you guys.
THNX

bold textHello! I'm just taking a moment to introduce myself. I'm Mike and I have been kicking around the idea of doing this for awhile, but just now getting more serious about it. I've dabbled in QBasic years ago and VB as well. I'm in love with snes and nes style rpgs and platform games, so I think that is what I will probably focus on. I'm sure I'll have to start with more basic than that though. I am thinking of being cheesy and remaking an atari game just to get some experience with this. Alright…I suppose thats it then.

Heyas!

I've just signed on and I'm looking to learn about design and programming. I'm mostly an RPG/strategy gamer, and I've been really fascinated by the ASCII game Dwarf Fortress by Bay 12 Games. I just read "A theory of fun for game design", by Raph Koster, and I really appreciated the view that learning and challenges are what makes a game fun. One of the earliest games I played that had a huge impact on my life was Ultima IV (Sega console, I think). It stuck out to me so much because the game requires you to behave, in-game, according to a set of virtues that you must eventually become an avatar of. This was different to the usual win-by-killing games I had played and have played since. This game had real world implications for me by teaching me about virtues, values, and beliefs, and I would someday like to program a similar ASCII or tile-based game.

I have near-to-no programming experience whatsoever. I did a little html back in the 90s, I played around with RPG Maker 2000 at about the same time, and while I'm comfortable with maths, I am no genius. I find I learn best by a) having a relevant context, and b) having concrete illustrations to depict abstract concepts.

I'm currently studying post-grad (non-IT) so I'm looking at doing this as a pasttime. Can anyone with expertise or experience in ASCII or tile-based games help put my virgin foot on the first rung of my ladder?

Cheers!!

FoM.

The game I'm making is called bold textShuriken Ninjabold text and the main problem is scrolling to the top of the screen, then stopping. I've checked a different game for an answer (bold text1945bold text) but got nothing. I want to do this using an object but if there is a way to code the room to do that then please tell me.

Now that Low Battery is done, I've gotten around to doing more work on this.

Well, yeah, since I finished Low Battery I've been happy that I can now work on this when I want to. :) So in the past week I've started doing some work on both it and the Tile Editor, and the most noticeable additions is the new ability to save/load levels and also play them in the game, which makes this version (despite still being a demo) a fairly playable one.

A proper list of the new additions is-
- Editor can now load, save levels and make campaign files (explained in Documentation).
- Editor is divided into seperate modes (again, explained in Documentation).
- Editor can now place enemies.
- TrackDown can now load levels and play them, as well as switching between levels to play a certain amount in order.
- TrackDown now has a health system, and the enemies shoot at you. However, there is no game over function- if you get 0 health, nothing happens. It's just in there to look nice so far.
- An ammo system for TrackDown as well. Your pistol has infinite ammo, but you have 100 ammo for Machine Gun and Shotgun. When you run out, you can't fire anymore.
- Some new enemy sprites as well.

That's the general idea of the new additions. You can download the latest version here.

You can also find the updated version of the Tile Editor Documentation here.

Notes-

The main menu is very incomplete, it's currently just a text display that lets you select a campaign. Upon running the game, you will see a list of numbers (probably 1-5), and then be asked to select a campaign. The list of numbers shows how many campaigns have been found, and you can put in its corresponding number to select that level.

A quick explanation of each campaign-

1- A small room with a bunch of enemies that don't do anything. This is only really fun for standing right in front of the line of enemies and moving back and forth, and watching the little wave they do as they turn to face you.
2- Another room with a lot enemies that do shoot at you. But again, you can't die so it doesn't matter.
3- Two small levels in a row that I made to demonstrate what can be done with the game so far. This is what I recommend you play.
4- A room where you're surrounded by enemies that shoot at you. I left this in because the bullets that the enemies fire make a kinda cool pattern.
5- Two small rooms made to test the level switching, you probably shouldn't bother playing this one.

Controls-
WASD- Move
Left Click- Shoot
Right Click- Knife Attack
1,2,3- Change Weapon (1- Pistol, 2- Machine Gun, 3- Shotgun)
Shift- Walk slowly (currently useless, but will have a use later on)

Hi! I found my way here from the PlayBasic forums. I just started using it a couple weeks ago and I like to think I'm getting fairly proficient with it. The last time I programmed was on my Commodore 64, doing Atari-style games and 2-word parser text adventures. I've been working on a space exploration game called "Star Captain," which you can look at here if you like. I really shouldn't have chosen such a difficult and math/logic intensive subject for my first experimentations with the language, but all seems to be going rather well (although, based on what I know of my programming skills, 2MB of it is probably worthless/redundant/over-complicated). It's kind of a cross between Solar Winds and Roadwar 2000. I really would like to hurry up and get it done, even though I've been wanting to make it for a while, because I also want to make an RPG using a hand-drawn art style that I've been dreaming up since I was a kid, and also another RPG along the lines of Nocturne (horror/paranormal investigation), which would use an engine similar to Fallout. I'm a professional author with 2 published fantasy books, I have some background in art and film, and what I'd really like to do is get some skilled and committed people together to form a company to make fun indie games. I love the way games were back in the 80's… games like Roadwar 2000, Wasteland, The Bard's Tale… games that might have been a little more complicated but were much deeper and more immersive than some of the graphical spectacles of gratuitous action and ridiculously simple and linear RPG's of today.

I have read a few books, many articles and countless blogs about game programming, but still don't know how to program a game. I think I've stumbled on why: I don't know what basic skills I need and how to use them. As everyone keeps telling me, games are different than event driven programming. I've successfully created database programs, file sorting and renaming programs, horoscope programs, etcetera. I do have a reasonable understanding of C#.

What got me thinking about this was a post about a guy who wanted to make a Pacman clone. Someone said the easiest way would be to make it grid based. I didn't know what that was. I've read three programming books and they never talk about breaking down your screen into "cells" and putting those cells into arrays and mapping where you can and can't go on the screen via the values in these arrays.

That makes me wonder, "What are the most common ways of getting a level in a 2D game on the screen?" (it actually seems easier in 3D)

Then the posts went on to collision detection and why the grid method alleviated certain collision detection problems. So, then I ask myself, "What are some of the most common ways of handling collision detection in a 2D game?"

Do you see where I'm going with this?

Every trade has a base set of skills you need to know to work effectively. What skills do I need to know to create games effectively? I can't learn what I need to know if I don't know I need to learn it.

I propose a list of common game programming tasks, list three different ways of accomplishing that single task, with the pros and cons of each method. I haven't listed any of the most common tasks here because I honestly don't know what they are, nor what to learn first and then build upon in sequence to make it effective.

Using the aforementioned Pacman example, I now know to research the "grid" method. A patiently explained detailed example of it would be great, but if nothing else, I know what to start looking into.

If all goes well, this could be the start of a great way to educate others on what to do after you've finished that beginning programming book :-)

Hello everyone,
I'm really not sure where to start, but I think the important things is to be here and introduce myself. I have no programming background whatsoever, a little bit of scripting, but that's about it. Where I come from is an art background. I have experience doing pixel art with Javaground for cellphone games and did very well there, but but primary focus in my career has been concept art. I studied at the Art Institute in Santa Ana, Califorinia where I learned many aspects of 3d art, which I also utilize in my career. What I came to find is that while I can create all these assets, I would like to be able to integrate these myself. Even if it's a little stupid game, who cares! I'll make a bunch anyway right?

Now, as far as I know, programming a 3D app is a bit more complicated than a 2d app…. So I think I'd like to start with a simple 2d platformer-a-la-megaman. Also, this will be a joint project with another novice, who should introduce himself shortly….

-Hybrid

Alright, I said it would be done a few days ago but putting in my friend's levels took longer than I thought. :P

Ok, it's Low Battery. You play Tim the TV Tuner, who was out servicing a TV one day when he got sucked into it. :) As such, your aim is to get out of the TV. This is done by playing through the 3 zones of about 4 levels each, through differing enemies and Channel Boxes that get in your way and by using your Time Controls and, should you get them, the Videos that each give you a special ability.

This was made for a competition over here in Australia, that's basically nation-wide. Normally, of course, I'd have made this in Basic4GL- but, the competition required I work in either Flash or Game Maker, so I chose Flash. I still like B4GL, but learning ActionScript has at least been interesting, and hopefully I can make use of it later on.

As such, you need Flash Player on your computer to play it. It's a Flash Player 7 file.

Instructions are in the game itself.

Download the .swf here.

There would seem to be a slight bug in the game- on a very rare occasion, the level might not load properly and as a result it may be impossible to finish the first level. Normally, of course, I'd fix this- but out of the many tests I've done, it's only ever happened once, and that was only after I checked it after on of my friends had the problem. So you probably won't get it, but if you do, it should fix itself by closing the .swf file and running it again.

And by the way, the enemies that don't move in the 2nd Zone aren't a bug- they're meant to be that way, they're fake.

Anyway, I think that's all there is to say. :P Any problems, just ask me.

A while ago I realised just how easy minesweeper would be to make, so I've been meaning to make a clone since. Today I got around to it.

It's my first program in Basic4GL in a while, it's kind of nice to be programming in it again, although I had to refresh my memory a bit after spending so much time with ActionScript (which isn't over JUST yet though).

Anyway, both the source and .exe are included. Controls are same as the normal game, Left Click to reveal a tile and Right Click to mark it.

Download here.

EDIT: Uploaded new file, there was a slight bug with the mine placement.

Hello, I'm from Czech rep. (middle of Europe :). I am studying Computer Science and have lot of experience with C language and minimum exp. with C++(until summer term, i've chosen optional subject C++). I'm very interested in learning how to develop computer games. I was thinking about something simillar to Commandos or Desperados at the beginning, because I think, I hope, it's "easier" then for example fps or rts.

My idea is to make a game with very inteligent AI, not with stupid AI like in Commandos 3… My plan is to create a complicated model of behavior in difficult situations, if for example the AI hears some shooting behind the corner, it won't run there like an idiot, but will call friends and carefully will investigate or if it hears shooting, it won't stay at the positions and after a while it will return to whatever it did before and so on. But I realize there is a long way between me and this kind of game.

So, I'd like to ask, if I should stick to C and C++ or choose the different tool to programme games, what kind of game should I make first and if anyone has some experience with making games in C or C++ to help me with basics of using algorithms and graphic libraries for games or give me at least some usefull references… And I almost forgot… Because I programme C mainly in Linux, but I hate Linux:), so I'm asking, what is the best tool for C and C++ in Windows? I've tried an DevCpp, but I didn't like it. Is it a Microsoft Visual Studio? I suggest.

Thanks for help, EaSy

A study of blood.

I did a study of blood last night before I passed out. I had no samples to work with, so here it is with peliminary rules :

A fresh blood pool (not splatter) is bright red. The edges are beveled as it does have round edges off the floor, but not much. Blood shines along the edge of the pool facing the light.

Several days later, blood turns black and cakes. It breaks like mud and leaves watery stain in between the larger "mud" cakes.

—hartnell

Hey guys,

I decided that i would like to try and make a clone of tanks. My one problem is i'm not sure about the best way to make the bullet rise and then fall. i have tried a few different ways that are useable but they just seem alittle "stiff". Any ideas?

Thanks
-Webfaction

HI,

I am am having trouble with a small game that i am working on. The problem lies with the collision of the bullet and the enemy. For some reason i can only get the enemy to delete when the collision is detected, if i place in the command to delete the curBullet when the collision is detected i recieve a memory access error and the program ends. I don't understand why the error occurs, i am assuming that i need to place the delete command in a different place but so far i have not been successful,

Thanks to all

-Webfaction

ps: Im am using blitz3d by the way

;Creates variables to represent screenwidth and screenheight Global sh=480 Global sw=640 ;Sets Graphics Mode Graphics sw,sh,0,0 ;Include Files Include "Spark.bb" ;Sets the buffer that we are currently writing on to be the "BackBuffer" SetBuffer BackBuffer() Global star=LoadImage("star.bmp") Global shipl=LoadImage("ship4.bmp") Global shipr=LoadImage("ship3.bmp") Global r1=LoadImage("r1.bmp") Global r2=LoadImage("r2.bmp") Global r3=LoadImage("r3.bmp") Global name$ Global enum=1 Global h=0 ;Create Types Type obj Field x,y,i,h,f,w,hi End Type Type bullet Field x,y,i$,h,f End Type Type enemy Field x,y,i$,h,w,hi End Type Global x=0 Global y=0 ;Create Player Global player.obj = New obj player\x=100 player\y=100 player\i=LoadImage("ship3.bmp") player\hi=15 ;Spark inverse position(s) Global sparkx= player\x+8 Global sparky=player\y+11 ; Function to draw everything Function draw() TileBlock star,x,y ; Draw player DrawImage player\i,player\x,player\y ; Draw bullets For curBullet.bullet = Each bullet DrawImage curBullet\i, curBullet\x, curBullet\y Next ; Draw enemies For curenemy.enemy = Each enemy MaskImage curenemy\i,0,0,0 DrawImage curenemy\i,curenemy\x,curenemy\y Next x=x-2 End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ ; Borders for plane Function border() If player\x>= sw-player\w Then player\x=sw-player\w If player\x=<0 Then player\x=0 If player\y>=sh-player\hi Then player\y=sh-player\hi If player\y=<0 Then player\y=0 End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ ;Creates HUD Function HUD() Text 0,0,"X Position:"+player\x Text 0,10,"Y Position:"+player\y Text 125,0,"Player Name:"+ name$ End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ Function CreateBullet() newBullet.bullet = New bullet newBullet\x = player\x+15 newBullet\y = player\y +10 newBullet\i = LoadImage("bullet.bmp") newBullet\h = 0 newBullet\f = 1 End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ Function CreateEnemy() If enum < 5 Then enemy.enemy= New enemy enemy\x=Rand(1,4) enemy\y=Rand(1,5) enemy\i=Rand(1,3) If enemy\i=1 Then enemy\i= r1 If enemy\i=2 Then enemy\i=r2 If enemy\i=3 Then enemy\i=r3 ;Sets A Rand Y If enemy\y= 1 Then enemy\y=10 If enemy\y =2 Then enemy\y=134 If enemy\y =3 Then enemy\y=271 If enemy\y= 4 Then enemy\y=304 If enemy\y =5 Then enemy\y=567 ;Sets A Rand X If enemy\x=1 Then enemy\x=745 If enemy\x=2 Then enemy\x=700 If enemy\x=3 Then enemy\x=680 If enemy\x=4 Then enemy\x=800 enum=enum+1 End If End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ Function MoveBullets() For curBullet.bullet = Each bullet curBullet\x = curBullet\x + 5 Next End Function Function MoveEnemy() For curenemy.enemy = Each enemy curenemy\x=curenemy\x-3 Next End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ Function CheckCollisions() For curBullet.bullet = Each bullet ; Delete bullet If it has passed screen If curBullet\x > sw Then Delete curBullet Else For curEnemy.enemy = Each enemy If ImagesCollide(curenemy\i,curenemy\x,curenemy\y,0,curBullet\i,curBullet\x,curBullet\y,0) Then Delete curEnemy End If enum=-enum - Rand(1,2) Next End If Next End Function ;------------------------------------------------------------ ;name$=Input("Enter Your Name ") ;Main Game Loop While KeyDown(1)=0 Cls ;Scan for input If KeyDown(200) Then player\y = player\y - 2 If KeyDown(208) Then player\y = player\y + 2 If KeyDown(203) Then player\x = player\x - 2 ;sparkx=(playerx+18) If KeyDown(205) Then player\x = player\x + 2 player\i=shipr ;If Spacebar is pressed then fire a bullet If KeyHit(57) Then CreateBullet() CreateEnemy MoveBullets MoveEnemy CheckCollisions border draw HUD createspark renderspark ;Flips everything from the backbuffer to the front buffer Flip Wend
