Well, for QBasic/FreeBasic and so on I wouldn't really know where to find tutorials, I don't use any of those languages, but no doubt some of the other people here would know.

As for what you know, sounds like you've got a good base of knowledge. Apart from the graphics, it would seem like you just need to focus on implementing what you know into your programs, and really once you know all the general stuff that's all there is to do.

EDIT: By the way, just call me Linkage/Link. The 2 is only there because I lost the ability to login to my previous account.

Hi Linkage2,
Well I have all the really basic stuff down, I can make a program that will display text, take and modify user inputs, draw circles, loines and boxes, do maths, all the really fun stuff ;) but I have hit a blank when moving forward from this onto more complicated stuff like integrating graphics, "what the hell is a buffer?" things like that. Any idea of where I can get some tutorials for that kind of stuff?
Thanks for your help!

Hi Daxter. :) So what kind of stuff is it that you still need to learn? General game design concepts (aside from thje syntax and such of any new languages)? Either way, looks like you've got a good plan there (although if anything the size of an RPG may be a bit much, although depends just how far you wanna go with it). Good luck learning.

I am definately interested in helping… I just dont know how much help I could be at the moment! But let me know how to get started and I'll see what we can figure out.. worst that can happen is we break the internet or something right?

(btw) The video is a project the guy did in qbasic 4.5, just a rotating 3D earth and moon hanging in space, real basic graphics kind of thing using basic shapes (circles, cylinders etc) and some color. I'll be back on dial-up in about 2 months :( when I go back to australia… no more youtube or ign for me…

Sorry about not being able to watch the video. I seem to be the only person left on earth who still has dial up. —hartnell

Welcome to GDN, Daxter. As it turns out, our next research project after Pong will probably be a Breakout Clone. Are you interested in getting in on the Pong project? We already have the AI solved. :)

We've already created sprites for Pong and the Breakout sprites should be ready by the time we need them. :)

—hartnell

I just thought I'd post here and say hi to everyone. Like a lot of other people here, I'd also like to be a games programmer. I've been working in audio visual for 3 years now and have saved up enough to go to university and do a 2 year course which I'm hoping to start next year. But I'm trying to give myself a head start by learning as much as I can first.

I have a working knowledge of qbasic, and have started using freebasic instead in the past few days. I know a little C#, not enough to make a game or do anything more exciting than calculate things, pop up boxes of text and data the user has entered, but it's a start.

My first project (after I get more of the syntax down) is gonna be a breakout clone, then a text adventure, then a top-down RPG, plus I'd like to get some basic 3D graphics going, something along the lines of what this guy has done here:

Earth and Moon

Thanks in advance for everyone's help, you can bet there will be a bunch of questions coming your way, and once I know enough I hope I can return the favor.
