Here's a quote from the start here page:

First you have to realize that you're not going to make your first game in a day. You're also going to have to realize that the first 10 games you will make will be absolutely terrible.

This is probably quite true. Especially if you have never programed before. You should start with the simple games (tetris, asteroids, breakout, space invaders etc.) just to get used to some of the concepts which these smaller games will introduce you to. If you start your first project with a too big game i think you will most certainly fail.

So if it is true that your 10 first games will be terrible then you should not make your favorite game yet :p

So my advice: Pick up a programming environment and start making your first Pong game.

Good luck :) And ask when you need help!

No matter which path you take, it's not gonna be tommorow! With that being said, learning to programming is getting easier everyday, and its quite addicting! Which operating system are you using?

Welcome to GDN, Sativa.

While I'd hate to rain on your parade, hoping to make an MMO from the start isn't a very good way to go about things. It's a very big project for someone who's new to game making and would be very hard to do. You need to learn all the basics things to start off and then work your way up to bigger things.

That said, it's a good goal to have in place for "when you're ready", whenever that may be. And it does sound like a good idea, although there are a lot more details that would be required for a proper description of such a game.

Hello. And welcome to GDN. =D. I don't know how to do any of those things (exact syntax stuff), but I know the general idea of how.

First of all, if you plan to be the game's programmer (or one of them) you need to learn BASIC (this site supports a lot of the basic languages) or you could try your hand at C++ and DirectX/OpenGL or C# with XNA.
If you've never programmed before I recommend learning FreeBasic, and then to do 3D use Basic4GL which is Basic and OpenGL already added.

Then you just gotta learn how to do all those things in your programming enviroment.

For the MMO part of the whole deal, you need to have a server scripted for the game that handles all players, or peer to peer with a single player host and people can join or leave the room for another. That deals with Sockets and stuff.

Hello, I'm new here… as well as new to the whole game design world. I've always been a game addict, and I have always had what I thought are good ideas to improve on existing games/genres. Oddly enough though, I'm not wanting to make anything too unique, just something I would really enjoy.

So, I need your help. I have no clue on how to go about getting started. I have played 3 games that I got really addicted to (well, there's countless of those actually, but these are along the line of what I want to make,) The Sims, Vzones and Gaia Online (the Gaia Towns is what I liked about it… unfortunatly it was a let down.. which is what made me decide to give a go at making a game.)

Hopefully you are familiar with those (surely are with The Sims…) as you could help me a lot more. Okay… so what I'd like to do exactly.

I'm wanting to make a virtual world where you can create and customize your character, clothes, hair, all that good stuff. Can earn money by playing various mini-games or doing other stuff (lol) and go to stores in the little virtual city and buy more items for your character and rent apartments at buildings, or if you choose to, buy a plot of land outside of the main city(s?) and construct and decorate your own house/yard. Basically a lot like I imagine Sims Online to be and a lot like Vzones.

Sorry if all that doesn't really give you a good idea of what I'm wanting to do, I really suck at explaining things. lol. What I need to know, is what would be the best program(s) to go about creating such a game and what not. The only experience I have at all is messing around with Blender (I suck at modeling lol) and messing around with 3ds Max for a while at a friends house. All I done in 3ds Max was try to recreate the Temple level from the game Goldeneye on 64 with the prefabs or whatever they are that were already on the program.

Hmm. I think I have said enough, if not too much already. Look forward to your replies, and thanks in advance.

Edit: If it didn't get through, I want this to be an mmog, where lots of players can join, create houses, avatars, customize them both and interact with one another and their surroundings and furniture.
