Hello everyone,
I'm extremely happy that I've stumbled upon this site. I am currently a college student working on a BFA concentrated in Digital Art. I started my collegiate career as a computer science major and plan on picking up a CS major. I'm still pretty new to the actual development of games (although I've planed on this career since the age of 2). I'm sure that I will have a ton of questions for you guys.
THNX

Forum category: The Community / How May We Help You?
Forum thread: HELLO!

bold textHello! I'm just taking a moment to introduce myself. I'm Mike and I have been kicking around the idea of doing this for awhile, but just now getting more serious about it. I've dabbled in QBasic years ago and VB as well. I'm in love with snes and nes style rpgs and platform games, so I think that is what I will probably focus on. I'm sure I'll have to start with more basic than that though. I am thinking of being cheesy and remaking an atari game just to get some experience with this. Alright…I suppose thats it then.

Forum category: The Community / How May We Help You?
Forum thread: introduction

Thanks for your help. Those plans are great, but more complicated than I recall.

This was much simpler with 9 compartments, 2 flash light bulbs in each compartment. One red one clear. Each compartment had one or 2 switches (I don’t recall, but I think only one). There was a white plastic that covered the top that the toggle switches where mounted in each square. The lines where draw on the top that lined up with the compartments below.

One person played. As the player picked a box, they would flip the switch in that box. That would light up white, and at the same time would light up another box being red.
Rules where you could not flip a switch on a box that is lighted. I do believe sometimes you did win on a rare occasion.
Kevin

Forum category: Making Games / Novice Questions and Answers
Forum thread: Looking for Tic Tac Toe plans from the 70's

I do agree The Legend of Zelda series is not a TRUE HARDCORE RPG, that doesn't mean that it can't have RPG elements to it.
All games consist of multiple categories such as Zelda being Adventure, Action, RPG, so on and so forth.
If you have played the Metroid Prime games anyone can tell you that for the most part you are running around in First Person and shooting things but it is not labeled and a First Person Shooter.
Also, with your definition of RPGs, must of the games that are labeled as such would not be. A good example of a recent game would be Mass Effect. Alot of the elements you described are not in this game but you do level, get stronger, learn new abilities, ect.
In closing, I think we all need to except that gaming is changing with technology and since we are not limited to, "My turn, I move up two squares and swing with my sword from half-way across the screen and hit you. Your turn, you move up two squares and shoot a fire ball and I move over two squares showing that you missed" and that we can make games more realistic means that we are not going to stick to those elements.
We all need to open are minds and stop be so narrow minded.
Thank you.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Zelda Is NOT An RPG

Thanks Matthew and linkage,

I spent some time wondering around the site and downloaded FreeBASIC and FBIde. It took me quite a while to find those and figure out what to do with them! As for lessons the FreeBASIC tutorials are doing great for a beginner like me!! As long as I learn the hows and whats and some of the more generic functions common to most programming languages, I think I'll do fine on any of them.

Now that I've got my feet planted where I need them to be, I know I can just trundle along at my own pace. I'll be sure to ask you peeps any questions I have!

Cheers!!!

FoM.

Forum category: The Community / How May We Help You?
Forum thread: ASCII, Ultima IV and your Holy Noobliness!

Hi FoM, if you're interested in designing simple tile based games you should take a look at the following two free languages, Basic4GL & Brutus2D.

You should also take a look at Game Maker the free version is a bit feature limited but you can develop games without too much effort. :)

Forum category: The Community / How May We Help You?
Forum thread: ASCII, Ultima IV and your Holy Noobliness!

Heyas!

I've just signed on and I'm looking to learn about design and programming. I'm mostly an RPG/strategy gamer, and I've been really fascinated by the ASCII game Dwarf Fortress by Bay 12 Games. I just read "A theory of fun for game design", by Raph Koster, and I really appreciated the view that learning and challenges are what makes a game fun. One of the earliest games I played that had a huge impact on my life was Ultima IV (Sega console, I think). It stuck out to me so much because the game requires you to behave, in-game, according to a set of virtues that you must eventually become an avatar of. This was different to the usual win-by-killing games I had played and have played since. This game had real world implications for me by teaching me about virtues, values, and beliefs, and I would someday like to program a similar ASCII or tile-based game.

I have near-to-no programming experience whatsoever. I did a little html back in the 90s, I played around with RPG Maker 2000 at about the same time, and while I'm comfortable with maths, I am no genius. I find I learn best by a) having a relevant context, and b) having concrete illustrations to depict abstract concepts.

I'm currently studying post-grad (non-IT) so I'm looking at doing this as a pasttime. Can anyone with expertise or experience in ASCII or tile-based games help put my virgin foot on the first rung of my ladder?

Cheers!!

FoM.

Forum category: The Community / How May We Help You?
Forum thread: ASCII, Ultima IV and your Holy Noobliness!

"Traditional board game RPGs like D&D relied strictly on the "leveling" up system because there was no real "combat". It was all about who had the best stats. On the other hand, video game RPGs, while still (typically) rely on leveling up, also have the element of simulated combat. Your timing and decisions, even in turn-based games like Final Fantasy can effect the outcome of the battle. Any real RPG fan will play games like Final Fantasy with real-time turned on, as opposed to the other option where the computer will wait until the end of time for you to play your "turn"."

Wow. You have never played D&D. As it is far more open-ended than any computer ever will, everything you do can be weighed and considered and used strategically without good stats. Hmm. I'm a wizard with a low int, str, dex, con… I know. I'll instead turn part of that stalactite into mud and impale what I am fighting. Wow. My stats meant a lot. Oh. And pen-and-paper game is not a board game. Know what you are talking about.

"Anyway, games like Elder Scrolls most definitely fit your description of an RPG, with elments like interactive dialogue, options on how to open doors/chests/etc. (like picking versus using a key), and leveling up, BUT it also has elements more akin to Zelda games like real-time combat where you press buttons to fight and have a wide assortment of weapons, magic, etc. So, is Elder Scrolls an RPG or not?"

Elder Scrolls falls squarely into the blurred genre of Action RPG. Zelda has been contested since its conception on the genre.

"The problem is you're trying to apply a "traditional" definition of an RPG, as opposed to the more mainstream definition. In today's society, an RPG is pretty much defined as any game where you play the ROLE of ONE central character throughout the game. You have to complete an epic quest, which involves more than just one thing like shooting (like in Halo). "

No. Just. No. If an RPG is playing the role of one character throughout the game completing an epic quest, Halo qualifies. You play as Master Chief John (Can't remember his last name). You undergo an epic quest to stop the destruction of everything from the Flood. You end up completely obliterating structures which were created to destroy the Flood's food source. Single guy saving the world. That's an epic quest. Halo is still an FPS.

"You actually have to explore, solve puzzles, and defeat monsters to unlock the next chapter in the game. Also, the most standard definition is a game that takes a long time to beat. Games like Zelda can take 20, 40, even 60 hours to beat where as FPS and platformers can be beat in less than 5."

Maybe if you suck. I can drop a Halo game in about 5-6 hours. Also, you don't have to do most of that to complete the game. In the first Zelda game, you can get all the way to Ganon without grabbing the sword at the beginning. You just can't beat him. I'll be bringing this up in a minute as well.

"Zelda games may not have a "points" based leveling system, but do you really think that Link from the beginning of OoT could defeat Ganondorf at the end of the game? No. You "level" up by learning new skills, abilities, and obtaining newer and more powerful weapons. Zelda games may not fit your "traditional" view of what an RPG is, but that doesn't mean it isn't one. It's just different."

Okay, now is where I almost agree with you. Generally, something different means it falls under a different genre, and here it does. Zelda has elements of puzzle games, action, adventure, and, yes, RPGs. The puzzle, action, and adventure are obvious. What is being contested is the RPG aspect.

The general definition I can find is basically a game which places a strong emphasis on storyline-driven arcs and character development, with the payoff almost always based on storytelling instead of experiencing a more dynamic world via nonlinear gameplay. Just because it fits, even though it is not always the case, I will add in a game mechanics system as well.

Now, the problem here is does the Zelda series fall into that description?

Yes and no.

Okay, we'll start at the beginning. Zelda most definately has a strong emphasis on a storyline-driven arc - but then most games do. As much character development as there is, most of it is not with Link, but with the NPCs. This is odd in an RPG, but not unheard of. I presonally play the Zelda games for the storyline more than anything, so I would say that the biggets reward I gain is that. And they are most definately nonlinear (as already pointed out about the sword in the first Zelda). Other points of this are shown in every Zelda game, in which you can go through different dungeons at different times and get things in a different order - all leading to one final point, to be sure. Also to note, I will pull out The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. In this game, you can wield the Megaton hammer through the game once you get it, and only rarely need to use your sword. You can do the same with Biggoron's Sword, as opposed to the Master Sword.

Game mechanics. This seems to be the big issue. You are correct in that Zelda does not have traditional game mechanics. What it does have is an increase of items, including upgrading your equipment to be more powerful. You also have different equipment for different situations (Such as resisting heat using the Goron Tunic in Ocarina). It requires ingenuity and sets you up for a moderately nonlinear game. However, I am avoiding statistics.

You begin with three hearts, and no magic. As time progresses, you are rewarded for doing heroic deeds or for sheer ingenuity by gaining more hearts (hit points, perhaps?) and magic (akin to mana or MP in most other CRPGs). By the end of the game, you are doing more damage, fighting stronger enemies, have more health (Which drops must faster), and a magic pool to speak of.

This is why I would classify Zelda as an Action/Adventure RPG.

On a side note, I am an avid player of multiple PnP games, such as D&D, WoD, BESM, GURPS, etc. And, I am all of 21 years old.

Also, to the other anon: Playing games that came out in 1987 means nothing when compared to a game that has been around since the mid 70's. Get another decade and then say something.

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Zelda is NOT An RPG III

I had been having an argument over whether or not it was possible to sell a video game idea to a company, and it would appear from your experience that she was right. It's kind of like trying to get Elton John to write a song based on your idea. Ain't gonna happen.

How, then, should someone proceed if they want to create a video game but don't have the programming acumen to make it happen?

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Selling Ideas To Video Game Companies

First of all, you insist on comparing video games to board games. Apples and oranges dude. Before you spout off your borish, repeatitive "OMG ure totally not old enuff to remember the GOLD BOX!!!11OMG!!!" rhetoric, allow me to elaborate.

Traditional board game RPGs like D&D relied strictly on the "leveling" up system because there was no real "combat".
